The Biz Kids
Tommy, the Lemonade King
|
He's the kid on the block that hammered together a lemonade
stand from scrap wood. He started by squeezing lemons by hand. He borrowed
money from the kids that ran the puppet show to buy a used electric juicer at
the thrift store. He paid them back, with interest. Tommy buys his lemons from
Billy and Suzie, who have a lemon grove
in their back yard. Tommy not only sells lemonade to people who walk down the
street, but he also sells lemonade at the Puppet Shows. He sells a small glass for a nickel, and it's the best lemonade it town. In winter, he sells hot
chocolate. He also takes care of the people who flock to the Rant Room to express their opinions.

The Puppeteers
|
Sally and Mary run the puppet show in their garage. They
charge 25 cents for admission. The shows are long, but very entertaining. They
use a lot of their money to repair and buy puppets, and create nifty backdrops.
They only have shows on Saturday, but all the kids in the neighborhood look
forward to the weekend to see what new exciting tales Sally and Mary will tell
with their goofy puppets.

The Lemon Grove Kids
|
Billy and Suzie live on a big corner lot. It has
a lot of lemon trees. They take care of the trees, and know everything about
the art of growing citrus. They sell their lemons to Tommy. They use most of the
money he pays them to buy fertilizer and upgrade their pruning shears. Some of
their profit is used to attend the Saturday puppet shows and to buy lemonade
made from their very own lemons.
Billy digs and tends to the trees. Suzie picks the fruit. But Suzie has many tricks-- she climbs the tallest trees to see what's going on outside the neighborhood, and reports back.

Freddy the Gardener
|
Freddy mows lawns. He's big and strong, and owns
his own lawn mower. He makes a lot of money. He enjoys the puppet shows, and
works up a mighty thirst every summer day when he works hard taking care of his
customer's lawns. He's one of Tommy's best customers. In winter, he shovels
snow for the old folks in the neighborhood.

The Bullies
|
The Bullies are Chris, Barney, Charlie, Chuckie and Nancy. Of
them all, Nancy
is the oldest, most manipulative, and meanest. But all of them will rob you blind in broad daylight. When they're not partying, doing drugs or playing video
games, they like to stroll the neighborhood with baseball bats in hand, and
intimidate the other kids into giving them some money, so that they can buy new
drugs and new video games. The Bullies say they deserve it, because they
"take care of the neighborhood kids and keep the bad kids from across the
tracks away."
Some of the little kids believe this lie. But Tommy,
the gals at the Puppet Show, Freddy, and Billy & Suzie know better. They hate
the Bullies. The Biz Kids hate paying protection money to the Bullies. And now they're getting mad. Real mad.
